There are a number of opportunities for Women to get involved with playing Rugby.

Junior Rugby is a game for all - Girls up to 12 years of age can play Junior Club Rugby and participate in mixed gender modified competitions.

Teenage girls between the ages of 13 and 18, can participate in school-based Rugby competitions. If you are in this age group and wanting to play rugby, encourage your school to get involved with a competition. EdRugby can provide resources for Schools to run their own Walla Rugby Challenge.

From 18 years, Women can play Club and Representative Rugby. State Rugby Unions can provide contact details for Womens Teams in your area. There may be the option for talented younger players to train/play with Womens Team earlier than this, as part of the Senior Rugby Policy.



The Australia national women's rugby union team, also known as the Wallaroos, are the national women's rugby union team of Australia. The Wallaroos have competed at three Women's Rugby World Cups in the past; in 1998, 2002 and the current 2006 event.

Australian women have been playing rugby since thet late 1930s, in regional areas of New South Wales. In 1992 the first National Women's Tournament as held in Newcastle, NSW. The following year the Australian Women's Rugby Union was established, and it was declared that the national women's team would be called the Wallaroos.

The Wallaroos played their first international in 1994, against New Zealand, also known as the Black Ferns. The match was played at North Sydney Oval, and NZ won the game 37 to 0. The team placed fifth at their first world cup appearance in 1998 in the Netherlands, they placed fifth at the 2002 event in Barcelona, Spain also.

The RFUW is responsible for encouraging more girls than ever before to play and learn about rugby with the rewards becoming increasingly noticeable.

The England Elite side continue to demonstrate their strength on a global scale and recent successes include winning the Nations Cup, four successive Six Nations triumphs and a runners up place at the 2006 World Cup. England will be looking to go one better at the 2010 World Cup which is to played on English soil for the first time in the tournaments 19 year history.

Women’s rugby as a sport has gone from strength to strength over recent years and participation is currently at an all time high, so whether you want to play for fun or be right up there challenging for honours, everyone is welcome to join in

The name comes from the use of the colour black and the silver fern as New Zealand sporting symbols. For example, the All Blacks is New Zealand's famous men's rugby team, The Black Caps are the men's cricket team and the White Ferns are the women's cricket team, while the Silver Ferns is the national women's netball team.



The Black Ferns are the current Women's Rugby World Cup champions. They have won three consecutive World Cups, winning the first International Rugby Board (IRB)-sponsored Cup in 1998, the 2002 World Cup in Barcelona, and the 2006 World Cup in Edmonton, Canada, defeating England 25-17 on September 17. The Black Ferns have participated in most WRWC events since its inauguration in 1991, only missing the 1994 championship in Scotland. They also won the Canada Cup in 1996, 2000, and 2005.
